Miix it up: Lenovo’s Miix 700 Tablet

Size Matters

SSD capacity:

You can never have too much storage.  The 64GB the Miix came with seems like plenty for a tablet, and it is – with some limitations.  As delivered with Windows 10 installed (plus VMWare Workstation Player, but no Virtual Machines) available storage was already down to 37GB.

Shortly after taking the tablet out of the box Windows 10 did a forced update to the 1511 release.  That’s fine, but since it archives the old version for 30 days in case a roll-back is needed the Windows.old files take up 20GB.  That doesn’t leave a whole lot of space for anything else.  Windows.old can be manually deleted via disk cleanup but that risks not having it available if needed.

It’s even possible that a Windows update won’t run due to lack of available space.  There’s some discussion on the web indicating that external storage can be used for Windows.old in that case – but that’s beyond the scope of this article.

I intend to run virtual machines on this tablet (more on that later) and those can take up major space.  Mine run between 3GB and 15GB or so and those, along with cat videos and other media files can really eat up available space too. A uSD card – I’ve installed a 64GB SanDisk – can help with the media and other data files but isn’t really appropriate for applications and virtual machines.

I elected to swap the stock SSD for a larger 128GB unit.  It’s physically fairly easy, as is getting the operating system migrated or installed on the new drive.  See the In Recovery, Breaking and Entering, and Copy That pages of this article.  A clean install is also an option, but isn’t included in this article.  Clean install media is available for download from the Microsoft site:  Get Windows 10

SSD performance:

Here for reference are performance numbers taken from the stock SSD and two after-marked 128GB SSDs when installed in the Miix.  All are m.2 SATA in a 2280 form factor.  This kind of testing is be a little “iffy” since Windows 10 can be up to things in the background.

Performance testing done with Crystal DiskmarkNOTE the installer version includes adware.  The stand-alone version does not. Read performance is roughly similar but write performance varies considerably.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. Have you tried upgrading the memory? Is it possible? How about installing a fresh Windows 10 install from a USB? Dual boot? I saw over at Tony mac they are experimenting with loading OSX on this. I have just bought the middle one for 475 on amazon (the 128GB 4GB M5 version) and i have a 512 Samsung m.2 that i am not using. In linux, did you get any of the pen functions to work? Thanks again.

    Hi,
I’m not going to be of much help.

The RAM is soldered, so no memory upgrade.

Windows 10 should install just fine from a properly-prepared USB flash drive (FAT32, copy the contents of the install ISO to the flash drive).

I didn’t experiment with pen on the Miix running Linux. Just gave a quick try to the basics.

Is the Wi-Fi card replaceable or it’s soldiered like the RAM? Also do you know if there is “Whitelist lock” in the BIOS to prevent swapping with non-Lenovo parts? I see that you swapped the SSD, but wifi card might be different issue.

    Great info, thanks!

The wifi card is a removable item. I believe it’s whitelisted.

Head over to the Lenovo forums, then SUPPORT and enter Miix 700 in the search box. That will pull up appropriate downloads including the Hardware Maintenance Manual.

The HMM shows how to access the wifi card and includes a parts list with the whitelisted FRU numbers.
